Travel Pack rePETe – Re-purposing Plastic Bottles

If you’re anything like me, you’re aware of the issues our planet is facing from our human footprint but sometimes feel a bit helpless about how can we effect a change? I’m talking about on the individual level. Although this is a review of the Travel Pack rePETe, it is it’s construction that really sets it apart. And what sets it apart is just another piece of the answer to my first question.

Background

So what is rePETe? I think this is best answered by the parent company, ChicoBag itself.

rePETe is a trademarked term ChicoBag uses to identify products made from recycled materials. All ChicoBag rePETe products contain certified reprieve fabric which is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. In addition, many products have other recycled components like carabiners, cording, and cord locks.

Like many of us ChicoBag founder Andy Keller was bothered by the number of single use plastic bags he found at his local landfill. Once it registered in his consensus he couldn’t turn around without seeing them everywhere.

But unlike most of his he grabbed a sewing machine and started a company devoted to recycling the single-use into multi-use products.

There’s no question that this pack is functional and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do; provide a small form, versatile ‘tote’ for carrying small loads. Recently while camping on Lake Quinault it was convenient to clip it to my belt loops while we hiked the lake trail to a small grocery, pick up a few items we’d forgotten and then hoist the pack to my back for the return trip. All the while leaving my hands free to take the occasional photograph. What make the travel pack exceptional is the material it’s made from and the message it helps promote. That being to break the cycle of thinking of plastic as a single-use commodity. Plus it boost a sense of accomplishment to be doing something tangible along with trying to get the message out. It's so versatile my only critique would be I wish they had made it slightly larger. I’d invite each of us to use one and give one as a gift (all my kids will be getting one). Think of the amount of plastic we’d take out of the system by doing so. It’s a small step of many in the right direction.
