Photo of the Week – Vargas Island
Digging through the photo library I stumble on this old photo, I can tell by the lack of gray in my hair and beard! It’s a self portrait I took one morning while guiding a private client on the west coast of Vancouver Island. This was toward the end of a 7 day trip through Clayoquot Sound. We’d had a mix of weather but the forecast was looking clear and sunny of the next few days and as you can see by my grin we where thoroughly looking forward to the break.
We had made our way to Ahous Bay on the west side of Vargas Island, one of the most spectacular beaches I’ve had the pleasure of camping. A few years back there was an incident involving a wolf attack on the kayaker (see Vargas Island Wolves) which made the news, and the bay was featured in a National Geographic article (Pacific Suite; Feb. 2003). Yet despite the publicity the area is still wild, pristine, and unfrequented by people. In the handful of times I’ve been out there since, I’ve yet to have to share a beach much less a campsite.
