Photo of the Week – Tall Ships

Tall Ships

I’ve always been a bit of a romantic when it comes to the ‘great age of sail’ and one of the first series of books I read was the Hornblower adventures, so when the city of Tacoma hosted the Tall Ship Festival Theresa and I grabbed our boats and headed to Commencement Bay to view them.

Just as we arrived the Hawaiian Chieftain and Lady Washington where staging a mock battle with cannons roaring. The thunder of their cannons echoed back and forth across the bay. It didn’t take much imagination to relive some of history’s epic battles; it was far more difficult to position ourselves for a good shot as the bay was crowded with vessels of all sizes.

However, with Theresa keeping an eye on the traffic, I was able to concentrate on the viewfinder and snap this shot as the two opponents eased gunwale to gunwale with the dramatic clouds adding to the tension.

It is a unfortunate sign-of-the-times that the Tall Ship Festival has been canceled in Tacoma due to budgetary woes. Let’s hope that we’ll see their sails again sometime in the future.
