Photo of the Week – La Push
What is it about stacking stones that has such a draw on us? It’s like sitting around a campfire and not staring at the flames. If the stones are there someone is going to stack them. And if they stack them someone else is going to have to photograph them. It’s has to be something about the symmetry that appeals to us.
Theresa and I had headed out to La Push to shoot the latest Surf Pummel contest. We had arrived a day early to scout positions and where treated to the most colorful sunset we had seen on the coast in a while. Throw a stack of rocks in the mix and you’ve got a captivating photograph.
La Push has always been a favorite among kayakers and surfers, a sleepy community nestled at the mouth of the Quileute River. The tribe members have always been warm and welcoming to us. Of course of late they’ve achieved notoriety as the home to the Twilight series and have become a sort of mica to fans. You can’t escape the influence of the movies while there but it hasn’t detracted from the beauty of the place in the least.
Even more recently La Push made the news with the tragic death of three Coast Guard aircrew when their MH-60 Jayhawk went down off of James Island. And this isn’t the first fatalities that the Coast Guard has suffered of James Island; in 1997 a 44′ surfboat capsized during a rescue attempt killing three of the crewman aboard.
Whether you’re a fan of vampires or just of fan of incredible coastal beauty and surf La Push is worth the long drive to get there.
