Hope Island State Park

If you have never been to Hope Island State Marine Park you are missing out. Situated in the South Puget Sound – its an oasis close to Olympia that reminds me of paddling in the Northern San Juan Islands BUT without the crowds!

Whenever a quick outing is called for Hope always springs to mind. Picnic tables overlooking the water, make a great lunch spot. It’s a great base to explore adjacent Squaxin Island, and Hammersley Inlet.

A very scenic hiking loop trail allows paddlers to stretch their legs, and explore the island on foot. Cedars and fir trees, an apple orchard, and old homestead with relic farming equipment, allow for side attractions – not just a scenic paddle destination.

The paddling scenery rivals the San Juan’s, and nearby Squaxin Island remains undeveloped, and gives one a sense of remoteness despite being a stones throw from civilization.

When a weary paddler needs a campsite Hope Island offers refuge with a campsite designed for the paddler, complete with kayak racks, to protect the surrounding beach vegetation.
