Mysterious Whale washes up in Puget Sound
A whale carcass has washed up in Case Inlet here in the Puget Sound. Nothing very unusual there, it does happen, but what makes this case so unusual is that biologist believe this is a Bryde’s Whale (Balaenoptera brydei) which normally frequent the warm waters of the tropic. The species of this unfortunate whale won’t be determined until the results of DNA test are finished as it is easy to mistake this species with its cousin the Sei Whale (Balaenoptera borealis).
The whale doesn’t seem to have been hit and pulled into the sound by a large ship which has happened in the past. So if it does turn out to be a Bryde’s Whale then this begs the question on what was it doing so far from its customary waters?
